Gilding Conservation Services

I specialize in the skillful craft and art of traditional water and oil gilding on period furniture, frames and decorative arts.
I use various methods of solvent testing before beginning any project. The most important part of this first stage of investigation is knowing your materials and their solvents. Knowing how to properly clean a gilded frame that has smoke damage, a layer of nicotine or has been repainted and or "touched-up", is key in preserving the art, historical importance and market value of a frame, piece of furniture or object de art.

Preserving the original gold leaf, color and patina.
Many times frames come in that have been entirely painted with gold radiator paint. In many instances the radiator paint has actually preserved the original gold leaf. It is amazing how much original gilding can be uncovered, exposed.

Although each piece is different and unique, typical conservation includes carefully stabilizing and consolidating any lifting or chipping gold, without disturbing surrounding areas. Reattaching any loose pieces, re-carving or casting any missing elements whether it be wood, gesso or composition (Compo). Infilling missing areas with gesso as well as preparing newly carved areas for gilding. Ingilding where necessary. Regilding new areas. Adjusting the color and patinating newly gilt areas to match existing color and patina.

I follow time-honored, ancient recipes and techniques to make all of my materials used for gilding.
I work with 22kt and 23kt gold leaf, composition leaf, platinum and silver leaf.
